Welcome to a blog that tackles the physical, psychological and spiritual issues around depression

Working Over Time

Many of the self-improvement publishers print books about people who made dramatic changes in their lives. These people have had an almost religious “born again” experience. In a matter of weeks or months, they went from the depths of tragedy to the heights of triumph. There they stand, a beacon and example to those of us who struggle day to day. They say that you too can hit a home run. You too can transform your life in three easy steps just like I did. This kind of story sells books, but it doesn’t reflect reality.

Realistic Expectations

Overcoming depression is a daily struggle. Some days you gain ground, and some days you lose ground. You take a few steps toward your goals, toward freedom, every day. You may even hit a couple of home runs. But I would caution you not to expect miraculous transformation. I would also encourage you to never give up, to always push forward no matter how much it hurts. At times, pushing forward will mean just getting up off of the couch and sitting outside, or making a phone call to try and get out of the rut you are stuck in. Don’t get discouraged by thinking that such a small action won’t lead to the changes you seek. Large walls are built one brick at a time, and the first course of brick looks pretty insignificant. It is only when bricks are added, persistently over a period of time, that you are able to stand back and see the whole structure.

It Works for Anything

This perspective extends to any area of your life that you want to change. Losing weight isn’t going to happen by starving yourself on a watermelon diet for 2 weeks. It takes sustained healthy eating habits and exercise - over time. Getting and staying organized won’t happen in a weekend of frenzied filing and tossing. You have to build systems and train yourself to use them consistently - over time.  Transforming your thoughts from negativity and worry to optimism and gratitude won’t happen by listening to a tape. You must remind yourself every time those negative and anxious thought come knocking that you don’t want to be stuck in this thought pattern. Over time, you will find yourself in possession of a shiny new habit that will transform your life and move you closer to the person you want to be.

Make a Move

Today I challenge you to do something, anything, to begin moving forward. Get up, get dressed, and go for a walk. Put your hands in your pockets and stare at the ground while you walk if it helps, but move. Every step you take is a small victory.
